With an unprecedented perseverance, there is nothing under the sun that cannot be brought down. By dint of hard work, everything considered impossible can be possible. Before pursuing my major I was apprehensive of studying Chinese language because I thought I could not and would not be able to cope with the studies. However, due to several encouragements from my family back home, the international student center and friends around, I was motivated and worked as hard as I could to overcome the difficulty. I overcame my fears and worked tirelessly to realize my aspirations.
As the adage goes in our local parlance, nothing good comes easy. I had to go beyond all odds to pass my Chinese proficiency level 4 exams (汉语水平考试). I thought I had jumped the most difficult hurdle, little did I know that it marked the beginning of more challenging task. But by dint of hard work and being focused I am sailing through.
Of all the universities in China, I decided to choose Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) because of the calm environment and serene atmosphere. It has beautiful people as well as experienced professors who are well versed in my area of study. I believe tapping from their galaxy of knowledge will aid me as a lady to achieve high academic laurels. Although there are equally good universities in China, I feel HIT is the best place for me to achieve academic excellence. But this dream wouldn’t have been possible if the Chinese government did not give me this privilege. I therefore want to use this opportunity to render my profound gratitude to the Chinese Government for making my dream of studying in China a reality. I also feel honoured and grateful for being given the opportunity by the International Students Center to share this wonderful experience with the entire foreign students.
Studying in the midst of Chinese students is tremendously challenging, because Chinese students study pretty hard and are very intelligent and smart. However, knowing what is paramount to me, I slowly coped with the situation. I sought the support of few dedicated classmates who usually helped me to translate very technical questions and supported me with some guidelines as to how to tackle some technical questions. They have really being instrumental in the successes I have chalked within the academia. I also try to attend all lectures by strictly following the course schedule. But when the inevitable or unexpected happens, I quickly can in touch with the department’s secretary.  I spend my time judiciously, bearing in mind that I am far away from home. Life away from home itself is a major challenge to every foreign student. But we are mostly being comforted by the fact that we have come to meet new friends, different people and have learnt different cultures, though it is not quite easy to acclimatize to a new environment.
With extra curriculum activities, I usually took part in most school activities which makes me feel part of the big family (the university). I personally fancy dancing, though it is not my only hobby. So, when it comes to performing a dance from Africa, be sure to see me there. I feel it is a way of promoting the African culture. This is to say that if we have any talent to unearth, then this is the moment to show it. It means that your talent is going international, considering the fact that there are a lot of international students in HIT.
I want to conclude by referring to a quote I like so much, which states that choreographers are not good dancers because they have the skill, but because they have the passion to dance. Therefore, if we have the passion to study and believe in ourselves, then we are just an inch away from succeeding. Our studies should serve as the pivot of our academic plans and above all we have to constantly remember that life itself is a challenge. The people who made it in life did not make it on a bed of roses. They did not get to where they are today on a silver platter but through dint of hard work, determination and perseverance. We have to be versatile and proactive to be able to adjust swiftly when situations change. But also remember that “Failures are those frightful things we see when we take our eyes off our goals”.
