Hi, I am Erwin Chandra  from INDONESIA. My Chinese name is 郑金晟. I am glad  to be the student of one of the greatest universities of China named Harbin Institute of technology.  My major is Civil Engineering which is being taught in English.

Since I am a Chinese descendant, my parents have given me a Chinese name since I was born. Some of the Chinese cultures are also followed by our family. This is also one of the reasons why I came to China, trying to fulfill both my parent’s will and mine. Even though, some of the Chinese cultures are followed by my family, I still got culture shocks when I first came to China. Firstly, I almost know nothing about Chinese language. Secondly, meeting up the people of different cultures from all around the globe itself is an enriching experience. Last but not the least, the weather differences as compared to Indonesia, as Indonesia is located near the equator line and have only two significant seasons every year.

According to what I feel, I would like to say that studying abroad has never been an easy task. There have been a lot of difficulties that I have faced. In China, I have to learn how to live independently, how to have a good social relationship and how to manage money that is sent monthly, and above all I have this big responsibility to pay back what my parents have done for me by studying hard.

In the very first year, as a new student, there were a lot of things I did not know and my Chinese language is also insufficient. However, I put my best effort to get used to the environment and also tried to get the best score I could get in every subjects. The first and second semester, everything went right and at the end of the year, I was so grateful that the efforts, what I have been putting in the whole year, paid off. I ranked first in my class and was informed that I got the first place scholarship. I was so glad to know that. Even though it is not so much, at least I can say it proudly to my parents.

Apart from my studies, I also joined some other activities such being the part of Indonesian’s Organization in Harbin, also some other activities that taught me some skills. On top of that, I have my fair share of hobbies which I would elaborate briefly.

First of all, I would like to introduce my hobbies. Most of my hobbies are sports oriented, like Soccer, Badminton, table tennis, swimming, etc. Out of these mentioned hobbies, first two are those that I do most in Harbin. In this one and half year, I have joined some badminton competitions and also soccer competitions and won some of them. I won some of them individually and some others collectively. Individually, I won the HIT Badminton Competition 2013 for men’s single and for collectively I won HIT civil engineering badminton competition 2013 with my friend LIM SOPHAL from Cambodia for men’s double. We represented our major civil engineer for men’s double in the competition between different majors and we helped the team in bringing the title “Champion for HIT Badminton Competition 2013”.

Secondly, since last October, I was officially chosen as the official member in Indonesian’s student organization In Harbin. It is a great pleasure to be a part of this organization. This organization does help Indonesian students in many ways. I am in the head division of Sports and Activities. I learn how to manage stuffs, I learn how to organize people, and most importantly, I learn what is to be the part such an organization. I hope it can be a stepping stone for my experiences in the future.

Thirdly, there are some other activities that I Join with the purpose of learning skills. This semester, I applied for one of the charity activity which called 支教. This is a charity activity where we will go to the undeveloped part of the country to teach some children about something. There are interviews and elimination stages for that, so that if you want to join this activity, you will need to have a sufficient Chinese language to teach the children. Until now there are three interviews that I have been doing and as the only foreigner that is trying to join, I think it is going great until now. I do not know whether I will be chosen to be part of this activity or not, but after some months of doing some interviews, knowing new friends, and learn a lot of things about what kind of activities is this, I am so excited about this. Not about whether I will be chosen or not, but experiencing everything is just felt so great.

Finally, I would summarize that even though it is not the easy path to go through, but I do believe that the best thing is not easy to get. I enjoy my days in Harbin, and looking forward to meet new friends anywhere and anytime. In a nutshell, I would like to thank my parents for their supports towards me, all the teachers, all of my friends, and all the people that have helped me go through everything.
