To deepen the learning of China’s excellent traditional culture and encourage college students to understand and inherit intangible cultural heritage, on July 11, 2025, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and Hebei University of Technology (HEBUT) jointly formed a social practice team and went to Nanbeili Village, Xushui District, Baoding City, Hebei Province, to carry out a summer cultural practice activity themed “Lion Dance Inherits Centuries-Old Traditions, Integration of Agriculture and Wisdom Shows New Trends”. With the century-old lion dance culture of Nanbeili Village as the core, the activity offered an immersive experience through multiple links of “watching, visiting, learning, and practicing”, guiding students to feel the charm of intangible cultural heritage during on-site visits, and enhancing their cultural identity and the sense of mission of international student youth.
Nanbeili Village is known as “the Hometown of Chinese Lion Dance”, with its lion dance technique having a history of a hundred years. In 2006, it was included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage protection projects. When the teachers and students of the practice team arrived at the village entrance, they were attracted by the lively scene of roaring gongs and drums. A wonderful lion dance performance jointly presented by intangible cultural heritage inheritors of all ages in the village was staged in the square. The students of the practice team stopped to watch, and many took out their mobile phones to record this shocking cultural moment.
“This is my first time watching a lion dance live, which completely subverted my perception of ‘folk skills’. It not only has a traditional sense of ritual but also strong artistic expression,” said LIU Boxin, an undergraduate student of the School of Astronautics, Grade 2023. He was also surprised that the performers included both elderly artists over 60 and primary school students as “little lions”. “It has truly been passed down from generation to generation. I’m deeply moved by this way of cultural inheritance through daily exposure from childhood.”
After watching the performance, the practice team went to the Nanbeili Lion Dance Culture Exhibition Hall to gain an in-depth understanding of the historical origins and development of lion dance. The hall displays props, costumes, gongs, drums, lion head molds used in lion dance through the ages, as well as video materials of past lion dance activities, which detail the evolution of lion dance culture in Nanbeili Village from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the present. The lion dance technique of Nanbeili Village is not only a festival performance but also closely linked to folk beliefs such as praying for blessings, carrying the local people’s love for life and good wishes for auspiciousness and peace.
“It was my first time seeing lion dance live — powerful, rhythmic, and full of meaning. ”国际教育学院2023级本科生U DIA KHO在参观过程中有着这样的感悟,“I felt the spirit of tradition through every beat and I never thought tradition could be so energetic and fun.”

In the Lion Dance Culture Exhibition Hall, elderly artists in the village personally taught the students lion dance techniques, elaborately explaining everything from wearing lion heads, basic steps, and key movement points to how the lion “blinks”, “shakes its head”; “swings its tail”; and climbs stools. Led by the masters, the students tried to imitate the lion’s movements such as jumping, circling, and climbing. Sweat and laughter intertwined, making the experience very fulfilling.
“I didn’t expect lion dancing to be this exhausting — even just blinking the lion’s eyes takes dozens of tries,”练习中的国际教育学院22级本科生FAHIM MOBASSHIR HOSSAIN说,“But once you’re behind the lion head, trying to move in sync with your partner, the feeling of being immersed in traditional culture is truly unmatched.”

This joint social practice not only enabled students to truly feel the charm of China’s excellent traditional culture but also narrowed the distance between college youth and rural intangible cultural heritage. After the activity, teachers and students from both universities and the Nanbeili Village Committee reached cooperation on subsequent cultural co-construction and intangible cultural heritage inheritance, establishing a long-term national conditions education practice base to promote in-depth integration of university resources and rural cultural revitalization.
In the future, the College of International Education of Harbin Institute of Technology will continue to explore the diversified cooperation model of “intangible cultural heritage + education”, encourage more international students to deeply contact and experience traditional Chinese culture, deepen understanding and enhance recognition through personal participation, become disseminators and witnesses of Chinese culture, and tell the stories of China in the new era well.
